Peonies I have always loved for their beauty and fragrance, much sweeter than a rose. I think the 'shame' is that they only last a few weeks .

The mythology of the emerald is that is was the crowning jewel in the crown of God's highest ranking Angel.
It symbolized his rank and power. When this Angel, Satan, led his heavenly rebellion and was cast out of heaven (Jesus said he 'fell like lightening'), his crown was cast to earth and there shattered into a million pieces.
When we find emeralds, they each have a flaw. There is no true emerald without some kind of tiny crack in it. The value of the emerald is determined by the size of that crack... the smaller the flaw, the higher the value.
The mythology states that the cracks are evidence of the shattering of the stone when it was cast to earth.

Pearls appear as round when harvested from salt water and oval or elongated when harvested from fresh water.
'Fake' cultivated pearls have a perfectly round center, while the 'real' or natural pearls are formed around irregular shaped irritants.
They appear in a vast array of colors - white, pink, black, blue, etc.
Pearls are called drops of moonlight. They are the Talisman of sorrow or regret - and ironically, also of wealth and position.
They are the symbol of maidenly purity, preservation, chastity, health and longevity. They are also a warrior's symbol of sadness when going into battle.
Moonstone
Moonstone is an opalescent stone that appears as bluish white.
It is the Talisman of good fortune, refreshed memory, protection and prophecy.

Alexandrite
This is a transparent stone whose color changes depending on the light source. If you are viewing it under artificial light - the stone appears to be green like peridot... but in the sunshine, it appears

This was the choice of Russian Royalty to symbolize their Empire - hence why it was named after Alexander the Great.

Carnelian
Carnelian is a translucent reddish brown to brown colored stone.

Jade was a symbol of fluency, but in nearly every culture that valued it, they attributed to it the symbolism of the five 'cardinal' virtues.

Peridot, Sardonyx
Peridot
Often more valuable per karat than diamonds, this stone is most valuable in its transparent olive green color. It can appear in a multitude of color variations, yellow, orange, blue, brown, and in shades from white to black.
It is the Talisman against nightmares and night terrors as well as a protection stone against evil spirits.
Sardonyx
This is a Red form of Onyx that most often appears banded with white Onyx. It ranges from transparent orange or red to translucent brick red. when sliced across the white band of onyx,
the sardonyx is often used to create Cameos. The white Onyx is carefully carved away to the red Sardonyx base leaving beautiful red backgrounds to the white faced scenes.
The Sardonyx was chosen by the Roman Empire to symbolize the month of August. It is a Talisman of the shy and a help to bring courage to orators. It is a Talisman of the hopeless romantic.

Sapphire
These stones, being the same stone as the Ruby, garner the blue end of the spectrum. The most valuable are the deepest cobalt blue.
It is the talisman of freedom from enchantments, freedom from captivity and was thought to have the power to cool the fire of hatred. The stone was empowered to pacify enemies, bring favor from authorities and brought protection from poisons.
It is the symbol of truth and constancy, religious faith, immortality and self esteem.

This appears as a fiery/milky flecked stone in a wide variety of colors.
It is the Talisman of the spirit of truth and prophecy. In it's blue and white forms it symbolizes Universal Love.
Tourmaline
This stone appears in a vast array of vivid pastel transparent colors, most commonly seen as a bright pink stone.

Colors range from 'Celestial Blue' banded in silver ore, through pale white to 'Celestial Green' banded in copper ore.
This is the traditional "Forget Me Not" or pledge of adoration stone in Western Europe. It is the traditional wedding stone in Russia. Shakespeare had the character Leah try to win Shylock's
favor with a turquoise ring.
Native Americans hold that it is the traditional stone of healing.
The myth states that the stone is given to someone who is ill, and that while worn, the stone will fade. As it fades, it draws the illness from the wearer and they are healed forever.
