What's a good potted flower that has a long blooming period?

I recently moved into a new bedroom, and I want to get a potted plant to put on my window ledge. Which flower is a good choice that has flowers for a long time?

Currently, I have a pot of tulips from Home Depot. I understand that by summer, it will stop producing flowers and begin its dormancy period.

Is there another flower that I can find - perhaps even plant myself, if it's easy - which produces flowers almost all year round?

My location is Southern California - Simi Valley, to be exact. It's hot most of the year, so I need a plant that can work in my climate.

Bromilliads
Reply:- Portulaca grandiflora - a plant that needs very little attention [get those with "filled" blossoms]

- Scaevola aemula

- Lewisia cotyledon
Reply:GERANIUMS
Reply:Being in SoCal, I would go for an Anthurium andreanum hybrid. Its comon name is Flamingo plant. The "flowers" last for 4 - 6 weeks and are waxy. The flowers are actually a modified leaf, but they look great, even fake. You might even get more than one flower blooming at on time!! They come in reds, pinks, peach etc. Look up the botanical name I provided on the net and see if you like them!!c++
